I read somewhere that the warming on the peninsula and western Antarctica may be a result of increasing frequencies in katabatic winds (1% increase can increase tems 0.4 deg C in summer and 1 deg C in winter) .

Anyways, if they keep up the hysteria it will be a good opportunity to buy coastal property cheap.

hi,
i'm doing a school project on antarctica's climate.
in the project i need to enclose a climate graph, so just wondering if you have records of a monthly recording of the temperature or snowfall for 2007. thankyou

“I was told by scientists that the entire Western Antarctica is now floating. That is a fifth of the continent. If it broke up, sea levels may rise as much as six metres,”

"(by the way, if ice is really "floating", presumably in sea water, then it's melting will have zero effect on ocean levels)"

The second quote deals in a way with the first, but I wish that would get more play. Floating ice displaces its own weight. Feller said to have said "Eureka" shortly after working that out.

And a simple commission-quality (see Feynman) experiment will prove that. Fill a glass with ice such that the ice mas does not extend abot the rim of the glass. Fill the glass with water as full as you can (OK for the ice mass to extend above the rim now). Describe what happens as the ice melts.

I find it strange that when discussing the Larson B iceshelf,
nobody mentions the Jun Jaegyu vulcanic seamount in the antarctic sound.
Observations of discolored water have it erupting from 1998 to 2002.
It was found by backtracking a warm current from the iceshelf in 2004.
In 2004 the current was 0.5C. I wonder what it was when it was erupting.
